Any tips on developing black and white photos? those of you who have done it before?
I have to develop white&black photos.
Tell me your previous mistakes so I don't make them.
Also if you have any tips, please tell me.
everyone makes mistakes in a darkroom.
first time i was in there, timer didn't work.
i forgot to set the aperture on the enlarger, etc. etc...
i inserted filter number 1/2 instead of 2.
you're bound to make mistakes, some "bigger" than others but, use these and learn from them.
most important, concentrate on what you're doing.
What color should I paint the walls to accent black & white photos?
I turned the garage into a model train room, and I have some very nice b&w photos in black frames with white matting. What would be a nice color for the walls?
play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I definitely suggest a color so that the b&w really stand out. Something like "tawny tan" is fairly neutral, but it has just enough color to make the b&w POP.
How to turn black white photos into color ?

Actually, you can add color to an existing black & white photo using a technique called "hand tinting." Before color negative film came into widespread use, some photographers would apply colored oil or water-color paint to their printed photographs with a fine brush. The results were actually not too bad.

A description of various hand-tinting techniques can be found here: www.opusframing.com/library/pdf/h…

A step-by-step guide is here: photography.about.com/od/developi…

Keep in mind that the techniques described will not work on a photo printed on an ink-jet printer. It will just smear the ink.
In trying to get good black & white photos with digital, what's most important?
Although I've read loads of stuff about the use of PS in enhancing Black & white digital photos, is lighting, range of tones in the subject matter, and appropriateness of B&W for the image still more important than fiddling around with post production?
Good well exposed images with excellent composition and use of lighting will give you the best black and white or colour images.

Usually taking some kind of class in photography will get you started learning how to use the tools associated with photography.

From that point on, you can use those skills to produce amazing photos.
How do you take black and white photos?
in professional photography, (like in a fashion photo shoot) how do they make the photos black and white?
1. Do they just set the camera on "black and white"
2. Or do they just take the picture in normal mode and then later make it b&w on photoshop?
The answer is as varied as the photographer. I know of some who always shoot color and convert later. I know of some who set the camera to black and white and take what it gives. I personally use black and white film.

Shoot color and convert later? Benefits include fine control over the process, and the ability to simulate an infinite array of contrast filters after the fact. Cons include more work later, and looks sterile without further refinements. Typically this person uses the color channels mixer to convert the picture to black and white.

Take the black and white the camera gives? Benefits include easy results, it's good enough for many people. Cons include need to use optical contrast filters to fine tune the results when you take the picture, and looks sterile without further refinements.

Take black and white on film? Benefits include you get the results you want without a lot of fiddling, it doesn't look sterile. Cons include, having to develop and scan the film later.

Me, I use Fomapan film, the closest thing to Agfa since they went out of business. I also print optically, but I'm in the minority here. Another incredibly great film is Fuji Acros, very sharp, good detail, and tonality that makes you want to slap your teacher.
How do you make your photos black and white with a splash of colour?
PLEASE HELP ME.
i wanna know how to have a black and white photo with like part of it in colour like a flower or something. is there a program i need to download or? please help.
BEST ANSWER GETS TEN POINTS. <3
Selective color can be achieved in a variety of ways, it just depends on what program you are using to do it. Here is an easy how to for paint.net, which is a free program that anyone can download.

The effect can also be done very easily on picnik.com. Just convert the image to black and white then use the brush to highlight the areas you want colored. I hope this helps!
Does anyone know of a photo software that can add color to black and white photos?
I've seen photographers that can take a photo, make it black and white, and then take an item and make that part colored while the rest of the photo stays black and white. (example: black and white photo of a person with only their eyes colored.) I have some photos that I have taken with my digital camera that I think would look really great if I could do this. Does anyone know of what kindof software I could get to do this with my photos. I have Adobe photoshop and I thought that I might be able to do it with that, but I can't find a way on there to do it. Any help/advice that anyone could give me would be most appreciated!! Thanks in advance!
With Photoshop (generic instructions)

1. Open Image
2. Duplicate Background Layer
3. Select Layer 1
4. Desaturate Layer 1
5. Adjust Levels on Layer 1 (CTRL + L) for a nice B&W color
6. Select soft brush for eraser tool
7. Carefully erase the parts of Layer 1 that you want the background layer to show through.

To Add color selection to a B&W image
1. Open Image
2. Create New Layer
3. Set Layer Style to Color
4. Select a soft brush on Paintbrush Tool
5. Choose color you would like
6. Carefully paint over the area you would like.
**Also try setting the layer style to Hue / Saturation for another effect**

Once you are done with either process, flatten the image then choose save as so you dont' over write original file
How to get black and white photos?
I'm getting a senior picture retake done and part of the package is to get some of the photos in black and white or sepia. I wasn't sure if they turned the pictures black and white after your ordered them or if you have to tell them you wanted some black and white ones before they took the picture. Just wondering because I know someone who got her proofs back and a few were already in black and white.
When photographers use film, black and white and other variations like sepia are shot using black and white film.

Now with most shooting using digital cameras, conversion of a colour image file to black and white is done using a photo program, usually Photoshop when done by a pro. This means that all you can choose the type print you want after you have seen the proofs.
How can I separate two black & white photos that became stuck together in storage? Will soaking them in a wate?
I have several old B&W photos that have become stuck together while being stored away. Is there an easy way to separate them without damaging the photo on the back?
maybe an iron with towels over pictures - use the steam setting - check OFTEN to see how it's going
Can I still take good quality black and white photos with just a normal compact film camera?
Equipped with black and white film and a normal compact 35mm film camera, am I able to take good quality black and white photos? Will it turn out okay? Or do I need a professional SLR camera? If the camera does not make a difference, can I have some tips on the lighting and environmental conditions that would help in taking good black and white photos.
What are you taking a photo of? Do you want a lot of contrast (full on black to full on white) or less contrast (more shades of grey)?
For instance, if you're photographing a person and want some moody contrast, you would want harder, undiffused light. A bare light bulb, even a soft white bulb, will give you a small hard light and lead to hard shadow edges, dark shadows and hard light and highlights. A photo with a lot of contrast. If you're looking for something with smoother shadow edges and more grey as opposed to black and white then you want a large soft/diffused light source like a large window with indirect light coming through.
The same applies to a landscape or city scape. If you want high contrast take the photo on a sunny day. Want more grey, wait til it's cloudy. Look up filters for shooting black and white as well. Specifically yellow filters. They will help you "tune" your contrast.
The camera is just a tool. A nice one may make the job easier but a person that knows how to do the job can get it done with almost any tool.
